Who runs Subtensor?

Many blockchains let anyone with enough stake help produce blocks. Subtensor does not work that way yet.

Today Subtensor uses a system called Proof of Authority. A fixed, approved set of operators produces new blocks and confirms them. Anyone can run a node that reads and checks the chain, but running a node or holding TAO does not put you in that set. The chain's administrators can change it.

Changes to the chain's rules are also made by a small group of administrators. There is no on-chain vote.

This is separate from Yuma Consensus, which decides how subnet scores become rewards. Validators who score miners do not produce blocks, and block producers do not score miners.

The plan is to move to Nominated Proof of Stake, where operators are chosen by stake that TAO holders put behind them. There is no fixed date.
