Root Reborn

Root rewards used to be sold for TAO automatically, every block, the moment they arrived.

That had costs. Every subnet token faced a constant stream of selling that ignored price. Root stakers lost any chance to hold early subnets as they grew. And the selling happened on a schedule nobody chose.

An upgrade called Root Reborn stopped the automatic selling. Root rewards now build up in a basket run by each root validator, and they are only turned into TAO when a staker claims them.

Your root stake itself did not change. It is still plain TAO on root, with no swap and no fee. Only the rewards are held as subnet tokens until you claim.
