Subnet owners

Every subnet has an owner. The owner decides what the subnet is for and how its work is judged.

That means writing the rules miners compete under and the way validators score them. It also means setting the subnet's options, such as how long each epoch lasts, from about 72 minutes up to about a week, and whether part of the miner registration price is held as collateral.

In return, the owner receives 18% of the subnet's alpha rewards. An owner can choose to have that cut locked automatically as conviction instead of receiving it as free stake. This is off by default. Locked alpha cannot be sold right away, so a locked cut is a sign the owner plans to stay.

Owners do not control the subnet's price or its share of emissions. Those follow demand for the subnet's alpha. A subnet whose work people value attracts stake, and stake is what earns it a larger share.
